PURPOSE

This collection is used by the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Legal Services (ATSILS) throughout Australia to report against targets for determining service delivery, as required under the contract for services with the Australian Government Attorney-General’s Department.

DESCRIPTION

This system is specific to the Indigenous Legal Aid Program and its current service providers. It is not available to the wider public.

DEFINITION OF FAMILY AND DOMESTIC VIOLENCE

Family and domestic violence is not specifically defined in IRIS. In practice, IRIS captures information as it relates to Domestic Violence Orders so State/Territory legislative definitions are reflected indirectly in the data.

Aspects of family and domestic violence captured in the data are:

• physical abuse.

COLLECTION METHODOLOGY

ATSILS provide an electronic data file quarterly to IRIS. No manipulation of the data is undertaken. The receipt of the ATSILS files is automated however the import into IRIS is a manual process.

Note: The data definitions and specifications are currently being reviewed by a data collection working group convened by the department.

SCOPE / TARGET POPULATION

All Indigenous Australians serviced by the ATSILS, regardless of gender or age.
